I have for sale a John Deere number 18, one row corn picker. It is field ready. These areable to pick narrow row corn. I bought it in September to pick corn in a small field but since then a friend bought a JD 55 combine and wants me to be partners with that. Thus I don’t needthis picker anymore. It is for sale locally so I may sell it prior to the end of the auction and end the auction early without notice. The previous owner told me that these are the last model ofplain pickersthat JD made. They are from the 1960’s.They donot have a sheller. The #18 pickersare unique as theyuse 2 augers for ear and husk handling. This makes for a compact, light weight(good for soft ground)and simple machine. One auger brings the ears from the snapping rolls up to the husking bed. The otheronelocated under the husking bed brings the husks up out of the machine andruns along the side of the discharge elevator. Any loose kernels of corn that come off with the husks are saved by action of this auger as the trough it runs in has perforations inthe elevator sidewhich allow the kernels to pass into the discharge elevator to be carried up with the cob corn to the wagon. The floor of the discharge elevator has screens in it that allow dust/dirt tofall outonto the ground rather than go on up the elevator and out with the corn. I’ve gone over the machine and greased all the fittings, gearsand oiled the chains.Anumber of the rubber elevator paddles were replaced this summer by the previous owner. It was kept under a shed roof and retains most of it’s original paint. Itdoes have some surface rust that wastouched up withpaint by the previous owner who alsoreplaced some of the decals. It is not a showroom quality retouchbut looks goodfrom 20 feet. The snouts are decent with minor repairs evident. They wereupgraded with std replaceable tips by the previous owner. They looknice. The #18pickersare set upwith 3 gathering chains rather than just 2 like most pickers or combines have. This was an improvement tothe typical 2 chain design. The 3rd chain is intended to help gather dropped cornandprevent ears from falling off the snapping rolls and onto the ground when not feeding stalks through the machine at the end of the row.The previous owner removed this optional corn saver gathering chainto prevent rocks from being brought up into the machine while picking wintered corn laying downnear the ground. I do not have this short chain. It is notrequired for use.One of the photos shows the chain above it. You can see the sprockets for the 3rd chain below the existing chain. All that is missing is the unneeded chain. The pickeris builtwith springassistmanual lift. However, the origional owner added brackets for a typical agricultural hydraulic cylinder to be fitted so that lifting can be done with hydraulics or a top link. This optionalcylinder or top linkis not included nor required to use. PTO shaft is included(540 rpm). The tires are 15″. They are cracked but hold air. The rims appear to be typical4 bolt wagon wheels. I’ve towed it at 50mph for10 milesbehind my Neon with no problem.I will deliver it for $1.50 per loaded mile or you would have to make arrangements for shipping or pick up. I have forklifts and truck cranes so I can load it on an open top trailer or truck. Ebay requires shipping figures with buy-it -now. I’ve estimated the weight and size. Contact me for exact size. It is being offered as - is. No warranties or returns. You can come and look it over. I will hook it up to my tractor and run it off the PTO for you to check it out. If my corn is not picked yet we can even take it to the field and run some corn with it. For some line drawing views here is the address to a August 1962 parts manual at John Deere’s web site. http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/pdfs/PC0639.PDF I(Ron) can be reached during the day at 517 852-1900. Evenings and sundays 517 852-9593.
